Men's Dress Codes Explained: Smart Casual to White Tie

Smart casual starts with a collared shirt and tailored separates; business formal adds a suit and tie. On a modern formal wedding invitation, a dark suit is suitable, with a dinner jacket also an option in the evening. Black tie specifically calls for a dinner jacket and black bow. White tie requires an evening tailcoat, white piqué waistcoat and white piqué bow.

For the rest of the kit, see our guide to suit accessories for men.

Read the room. Then the details.

Know the code.
Make it your own.

At the relaxed end, fit and a clean collar do most of the work. Further up, the tie, cuffs and pocket square become part of a more deliberate outfit.

You do not need a new wardrobe for every invitation. You do need to know when a favourite business suit has reached its limit.

Formal dress codes for men at a glance: the full ladder

Read the invitation first. If it says only formal, ask one useful question: “Are you expecting dark suits or dinner jackets?” A specific code, the host's instructions and any venue rules take priority over a general guide.

Casual sits below this ladder: everyday clothes, with no tie expected. From smart casual upwards, the shirt, tailoring and finishing details become more deliberate.

A shirt, a neckwear choice and a finishing detail for each level
Dress code The outfit Shirt Tie or bow tie? Finishing detail
Smart casual Tailored separates; blazer for a smarter setting Collared, plain or quietly patterned Usually open collar; knit tie optional Textured square if wearing a jacket
Business casual Chinos or tailored trousers; jacket as the office requires White, pale blue or a fine stripe Usually optional; keep one for a smarter meeting Neat belt and dress socks
Business formal / lounge suit Matching navy or charcoal suit White or pale blue dress shirt Restrained necktie Simple tie bar or compatible cufflinks
Cocktail / semi-formal Tailored suit; darker for evening White, pale or subtle pattern A necktie is our starting point Pocket square or understated cufflinks
Formal Dark suit; dinner jacket also suitable for a formal evening wedding Crisp white dress shirt Conservative necktie with the suit Plain white square
Black tie Dinner jacket / tuxedo and matching formal trousers White evening shirt Black bow tie Cufflinks or studs for the shirt; white square
White tie Evening tailcoat and white piqué waistcoat Stiff-front white shirt with wing collar Hand-tied white piqué bow Formal studs and cufflinks; plain white square

These are practical outfit groups. Lounge suit shares business formal's suit-and-tie foundation. Cocktail and semi-formal overlap, so we group them together: the time, venue and invitation guide how restrained or expressive you make that suit. Black tie and white tie introduce different garments.

What should you wear for each dress code?

Use these combinations as starting points. Add your own tailoring and shoes, then buy only the pieces you need. Neckwear is optional in the first two edits; the later outfits spell out when it becomes part of the code.

The shirts in these edits are Classic Fit. For Slim Fit, swap in Carruthers White for business formal, Giambi Light Blue for business casual and the Walters White Twill French Cuff with cufflinks for cocktail.

01 · Smart casual

What does smart casual mean for men?

A collared shirt + tailored trousers + one quiet detail.

Smart casual is polished without the full suit-and-tie uniform. Start with chinos or tailored trousers, a clean collared shirt and leather loafers or lace-ups. Add an unstructured blazer for dinner or a smarter invitation.

Our starting point is the Hawthorne Khaki shirt with navy trousers. Its warm colour works with a dark jacket, and the button cuffs keep the finish simple. Wear the collar open; add the Aurora Navy Knitted Tie when you want more structure.

A collared shirt, worn open and tucked neatly. Pictured: Hawthorne Khaki Easy-Iron Twill Shirt.

For a jacket, the Scottish Connery Wool Pocket Square brings a little texture. Without a breast pocket, leave the square at home. A dress code is not a request to wear every accessory.

Can you wear jeans? In a relaxed smart-casual setting, dark, clean denim can work. For an unfamiliar venue or a more traditional invitation, choose chinos. Sportswear, distressed denim and beach footwear are poor starting points.

02 · Business casual

How is business casual different from smart casual?

A work-ready shirt + tailored trousers + tidy leather and socks.

Business casual answers to colleagues and clients. Keep the same easy movement as smart casual, with a quieter palette and a shirt that would look composed in a meeting. Chinos, a tucked collared shirt and polished shoes make a reliable first outfit.

Wear the Henley Emerald Stripe with stone or navy trousers, or choose the finer onyx stripes of Pemberton. Add a plain jacket when the day calls for it. A navy basket-weave necktie can stay in your bag for a client meeting.

Henley, from a striped-tie close-up to an open collar. Shop Henley Emerald Stripe.

Office, without the guesswork

Keep the collar ready.

A tie cannot rescue a collar that is too tight, and removing it does not fix a shirt that pulls across the chest. Try the shirt sitting down as well as standing up.

For a first job, our graduate work wardrobe guide turns this into a weekly rotation. For the appointment before day one, read Should You Wear a Tie for a Job Interview? If you cannot find out what the team wears on day one, dress one notch above your best estimate and carry a tie.

Match the belt's colour family to your shoes and wear socks that sit neatly under the trousers. Our dress sock guide covers the finishing choices.

03 · Business formal

When does a suit and tie become the starting point?

A navy or charcoal suit + white shirt + restrained tie.

Business formal means matching tailoring and a necktie. Choose a navy or charcoal suit, a white or pale blue dress shirt and polished leather shoes. Keep the strongest patterns for another day.

Lounge suit uses this same foundation. Debrett’s defines it as a suit worn with a shirt and tie for business and social occasions. The name describes conventional tailoring, not clothes for the sofa.

Pair the Windsor Royal White with the Navy Blue Basket Weave Necktie. The shirt's white dobby gives the navy tie a clean outline. Both can move from an important meeting to a suit-and-tie dinner.

The Windsor has button cuffs, so it does not need cufflinks. The Mini Connery Silver Tie Bar is a practical finishing choice: clip it through both tie blades to the shirt placket, keeping it shorter than the tie's width.

04 · Cocktail & semi-formal

What should men wear for cocktail or semi-formal?

A tailored suit + a considered tie + one celebratory detail.

For a wedding or an evening reception, start with a suit and necktie. Navy or charcoal works after dark; a lighter suit can suit a daytime celebration. Cocktail gives you room for a richer colour or a small pattern while keeping the outfit put together.

Time of day matters. The Emily Post Institute includes a blazer, grey flannels and tie for a daytime semi-formal wedding, while evening points to a dark suit. For lighter colours and warm-weather combinations, read what to wear to a summer wedding.

Try the Beaufort Riviera with the Merlot Burgundy Twill Necktie and a plain navy suit. Blue and ivory stripes sit below a white collar, while burgundy gives the outfit a clear focal point. Keep the square plain if you add one.

Let one detail speak

A little colour. Proper cuffs.

Beaufort has French cuffs, which need cufflinks. The Scottish Connery Black Cufflinks give them a restrained black-and-silver finish.

Keep the pocket square modest, and use a tie knot that fills the collar without forcing its points apart. Our tie pattern guide helps you change the pattern scale without crowding the outfit.

Semi-formal does not mean half dressed. A suit and tie is the dependable interpretation for an unfamiliar social invitation. A relaxed cocktail setting can work with an open collar. Our guide to whether cocktail attire requires a tie explains when to keep it and when to leave it off.

05 · Formal

What does a formal dress code mean for men?

Dark suit + white shirt + necktie; a dinner jacket also suits a formal evening wedding.

Formal on a modern US wedding invitation allows a dark suit, dress shirt and conservative tie. The Emily Post Institute also lists a tuxedo for a formal evening wedding, and requires it when the invitation specifies black tie.

That makes the wording useful: lounge suit asks for the suit-and-tie outfit above; black tie asks for a dinner jacket. If the invitation says only formal, confirm which outfit the host expects.

In older British usage, formal could mean white tie, with semi-formal meaning black tie. Most invitations now use the word more loosely, which is why the host’s answer matters.

For a confirmed dark-suit brief, keep the white Windsor from the business-formal edit and add the Navy Blue Cotton Necktie, a plain white linen square and polished black shoes. Use a straight fold and keep the shirt collar crisp. Familiar pieces, with the details considered.

For an Australian school formal or a US prom, start with our Year 12 formal and prom outfit guide.

06 · Black tie

What changes when the invitation says black tie?

Dinner jacket + white evening shirt + black bow tie.

Black tie calls for a dinner jacket or tuxedo with matching formal trousers, a white evening shirt and a black bow tie. Start with black or midnight blue, black formal shoes and black dress socks.

The shirt is an evening shirt: look for an appropriate pleated, marcella or concealed front, with the cufflinks or studs its construction requires. A coloured business stripe does not belong in this outfit.

Our Bond Black Self Tie Diamond Tip Bow Tie brings the hand-tied finish. Add the White Linen Pocket Square and Scottish Connery cufflinks for a French-cuff shirt. These are finishing pieces; organise the dinner jacket, trousers and evening shirt separately. If your evening shirt has stud holes, our Black Pearl Silver Tuxedo Shirt Studs fasten the front.

07 · White tie

What makes white tie the most formal evening code?

Evening tailcoat + stiff white shirt + white piqué bow and waistcoat.

White tie is full evening dress. The outfit centres on an evening tailcoat and matching formal trousers, a stiff-front white wing-collar shirt, a white piqué waistcoat and a hand-tied white piqué bow tie. Formal cufflinks, studs and highly polished or patent black shoes complete it.

For a one-off invitation, hire the specialist pieces together and arrange a fitting. The shirt, waistcoat and bow need to work as a set. A white satin wedding bow or long white necktie does not provide the same finish.

Add a plain white square; our White Linen Pocket Square works as that small final detail. Keep the rest of the outfit within the traditional brief. This is one occasion where the invitation has already done most of the styling.

Is morning dress the same as white tie?

No. Morning dress is formal daywear: a morning coat, waistcoat, formal trousers and a necktie. White tie is evening dress with an evening tailcoat, white waistcoat and white bow tie.

A daytime wedding or ceremonial invitation may specify morning dress. Arrange that outfit around the host's requirements. Do not transfer the white tie bow to it simply because both are highly formal.

The final check: collar, knot, cuffs and square

Collar: close it before choosing the knot. You should be able to move and sit comfortably without the shirt pulling.

Neckwear: keep the knot in proportion to the collar and the tie tip around the waistband. For a bow, check the shape against your face and collar.

Cuffs: button cuffs fasten themselves; French cuffs need cufflinks. Studs are for a shirt with stud holes.

Square: connect a colour or texture without making every accessory identical. Plain white is the easy answer for a dark suit or evening dress.

Our tie-knot instructions and pocket-square folds take care of the technique. Our shirt collar guide explains the collar shapes. For the shirt silhouette, start with Slim Fit vs Classic Fit.

Before leaving, sit down, raise your arms and look at the whole outfit. A well-fitting shirt, a settled knot and clean shoes do more than a fourth accessory.

Men’s dress codes: frequently asked questions

What is a formal dress code for men?

For a modern formal wedding, wear a dark suit, white dress shirt and conservative tie. A dinner jacket is also suitable in the evening. If the invitation specifically says black tie, wear the dinner jacket and black bow tie; for formal alone, confirm the host’s preference.

Is smart casual the same as business casual?

They overlap. Smart casual serves social settings and gives you more freedom with colour and texture. Business casual keeps the same polished separates but answers to the workplace and its expectations.

Can men wear jeans for smart casual?

Dark, clean jeans can work in a relaxed smart-casual setting. Chinos or tailored trousers are the safer starting point for an unfamiliar venue or a traditional invitation.

Do you need a tie for business casual?

Usually not. A tucked collared shirt and tailored trousers make a reliable starting point. Add a jacket or restrained tie when the workplace or meeting calls for it.

Are cocktail and semi-formal the same?

They overlap, so our starting point for both is a suit and necktie. Cocktail gives room for colour and personality, and an open collar can work at a relaxed cocktail event. An evening semi-formal invitation calls for a darker, more restrained outfit.

What does lounge suit mean?

A matching suit with a dress shirt and tie, worn for business or a social occasion. It shares business formal’s foundation. A dark navy or charcoal suit, white shirt, conservative necktie and polished leather shoes is a straightforward choice.

Can I wear a normal black suit to a black tie event?

An ordinary black business suit is not conventional black tie. Black tie calls for a dinner jacket or tuxedo, matching formal trousers, a white evening shirt and a black bow tie.

What shirt should I wear for black tie?

A white evening shirt with an appropriate pleated, marcella or concealed front. Choose the cufflinks and studs its construction requires, and keep coloured business stripes for a different outfit.

What is the difference between black tie and white tie?

Black tie uses a dinner jacket, white evening shirt and black bow tie. White tie uses an evening tailcoat, stiff-front white wing-collar shirt, white piqué waistcoat and hand-tied white piqué bow.

What does creative black tie mean?

Creative black tie keeps the formality of black tie but invites some personality: a velvet dinner jacket, a coloured or patterned bow tie, or a bolder pocket square. Keep the evening shirt and tailoring formal, and let one detail carry the creativity.

What are men’s dress code levels in order?

Casual comes first. Our practical ladder then moves through smart casual, business casual, business formal or lounge suit, cocktail or semi-formal, formal, black tie and white tie. Cocktail and semi-formal overlap; lounge suit uses the same suit-and-tie foundation as business formal.

Is morning dress the same as white tie?

No. Morning dress is formal daywear with a morning coat, waistcoat and necktie. White tie is formal evening dress with an evening tailcoat, white waistcoat and white bow tie.

What should I do if the invitation is unclear?

Ask the host what outfit they expect. For formal, ask whether that means a dark suit or a dinner jacket. For an unfamiliar smart-casual setting, start with a collared shirt, tailored trousers and a jacket.

The invitation, answered

A good shirt. The right tie. You're ready.

Start with the level of dress, choose the shirt that fits and finish with one or two considered details. The occasion can change. Good judgement travels.
