Slim Fit vs Classic Fit Shirts: Which Should You Buy?
Keep your collar size. Change the fit. Slim Fit shirts follow the chest and taper at the waist; Classic Fit shirts offer more ease through the torso and sleeves. When the collar fits but the waist doesn't, compare the other cut before buying a larger size. The right shirt sits cleanly and lets you move, whatever the name on its label.

Slim Fit vs Classic Fit shirt: what's the difference?
Slim Fit tapers closer through the waist. Classic Fit gives you more room through the chest, torso and arms. Both can look sharp beneath a suit. The first question is whether your collar fits; the second is whether there's enough space to move, sit and wear the shirt comfortably all day.
| What to compare | OTAA Slim Fit | OTAA Classic Fit |
|---|---|---|
| Silhouette | More closely contoured | More relaxed drape |
| Chest | Closer to the body; check reaching room | More ease through the chest |
| Waist | More taper; less spare fabric when tucked | More room when sitting |
| Upper arms | A trimmer sleeve outline | More room around the arms |
| Under a jacket | Less fabric to gather when sized correctly | Just as formal with a clean shoulder and collar fit |
| Untucked | Often a neater torso outline; check the hem length | A looser silhouette; check for extra width and length |
| Starting point | You prefer a closer outline and can move freely | You prefer more room through the middle or chest |
Our rule: if your usual collar feels comfortable, compare Slim and Classic in that same collar size first. Change the cut for a body-fit problem; change the collar size if the collar itself is wrong. Finished garment measurements matter more than the fit name.
OTAA Slim Fit vs Classic Fit measurements: how much room changes?
In collar size 40, Classic Fit is 9 cm (3.5 in) roomier at the waist and 7 cm (2.8 in) roomier at the chest than Slim Fit. In our OTAA WHITE SHIRT chart, both cuts list a 66 cm (26.0 in) sleeve and 79 cm (31.1 in) shirt length. The difference is room around the body, not a longer sleeve.

Chest and waist are full garment circumferences, not body measurements. Source: the OTAA WHITE SHIRT size chart. Use each shirt's own chart when choosing another design.
Lay a shirt you like flat, buttoned and smoothed out. Double its chest and waist widths to compare them with these circumferences. Compare sleeve and shirt length separately. A comfortable collar plus the right amount of room through the body is the combination you're after.
Slim, classic, regular, tailored or athletic: what do the names mean?
A fit name describes a silhouette; the measurements tell you how much room it gives you. Slim usually means a closer waist, Classic a roomier torso, and extra slim a closer cut again. Tailored and athletic labels need the same check: compare the finished chest and waist with a shirt that fits you well.
At OTAA, our two main shirt collections are Slim Fit and Classic Fit. Slim gives a closer silhouette; Classic offers more ease. Start with those two cuts, then let the collar, chest and waist decide.
The ISO clothing-size standard uses body measurements to designate a size. Garment measurements include the extra room built into the cut; the Utah Education Network calls this ease. That is why two shirts can share a size label and feel different.
Switching from another brand? Match the collar measurement first, then compare the garment's finished chest, waist, shoulder, sleeve and body length. The size name alone cannot show you how the fabric will fall.
Where do Slim Fit and Classic Fit actually feel different?
Start at the waist
The extra taper is often the first visual difference. Slim Fit reduces spare fabric at the middle, particularly when tucked into trousers. Classic Fit provides more ease when sitting or moving around during the workday. If your collar fits and the placket pulls at your waist, compare the other cut before reaching for a bigger neck size.
Then check the chest and shoulders
The button line should lie flat with your arms relaxed. Reach forward: if the fabric strains across your upper back, compare Classic Fit in the same collar size. If the shoulders sit badly in both cuts, check your overall size and the specific garment measurements.
Sleeve width and sleeve length are separate
A slim sleeve sits closer around the arm; its length is a different measurement. OTAA's common product options display collar centimetres, collar inches and letter sizes, not a US-style combined size such as “16 / 34–35”. The measurement table separates sleeve length from body width. Compare the sleeve of a shirt you already own, then use our Size Finder to choose your size.

Four tests to find the right dress-shirt fit
Button the shirt, tuck it in and move. These four simple checks tell you more than the size label ever will.
Fasten the collar and front. The collar should feel comfortably secure and the button placket should lie flat rather than pull at the chest or stomach.
Gently pinch spare fabric at the chest and waist. Some ease is healthy; a strained front or a large fold of extra cloth suggests the cut or size isn't right.
Extend your arms in front and overhead. Your back and upper arms should move without binding, and the shirt should stay reasonably tucked.
Sit and lean forward. If the waist buttons strain, try Classic Fit in the same collar size. If cloth billows around the middle, compare Slim Fit.
For measuring technique, our shirt measurement guide covers neck, chest, waist, shoulders and arm length. Use the current OTAA Size Finder for a purchase-specific size decision.
Is Slim Fit or Classic Fit better for your build?
There is no single fit for every age, height or body shape. Two men can share a collar size and need different amounts of fabric across their chest and waist. Use these as starting points, then put the shirt through the four tests.
| If you… | Start with | Check this |
|---|---|---|
| Have a narrower waist than chest | Slim Fit | Does the waist lie neatly without pulling at the chest? |
| Have broad shoulders or a muscular chest | Either fit | Try your collar size first. If Slim pulls across the upper back, test Classic. |
| Prefer room at the midsection | Classic Fit | Try the sit test and check that shoulders aren't oversized. |
| Wear a suit jacket most days | Either fit | Check collar, shoulders and excess cloth beneath the jacket. |
| Often wear your shirt untucked | Often Slim Fit | A closer waist may look neater, but check hem length separately. |
| Want extra ease through hot working days | Often Classic Fit | Room can help, but cotton weave and fabric weight matter too. |
Broad shoulders don't automatically require a special athletic fit. A correctly sized Classic Fit can look as sharp as Slim Fit, and a muscular man can wear Slim if the chest and shoulders allow movement.
Keep your collar size: how to read OTAA's shirt labels
Our Slim Fit and Classic Fit collections use the same core collar-size labels. They give you a starting point across Australian centimetres, US inches and letter sizes. They do not by themselves show the finished chest, waist or sleeve measurements.
| Product label | Collar (cm) | Collar (in, shown) | Letter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 38 (S) / 15 | 38 | 15 | S |
| 40 (M) / 15.7 | 40 | 15.7 | M |
| 42 (L) / 16.5 | 42 | 16.5 | L |
| 44 (XL) / 17.5 | 44 | 17.5 | XL |
| 46 (XXL) / 18 | 46 | 18 | XXL |
| 48 (XXXL) / 19 | 48 | 19 | XXXL |
These are OTAA's collar labels. For the room through the body, use the finished measurements above. The OTAA WHITE SHIRT has additional collar increments and both fit options on its own product page.
Between collar sizes?
Start with a shirt you own that closes comfortably at the neck. When fastened, the collar should feel secure, with room for roughly one finger rather than pressure on the throat. If the collar itself is tight, check the next collar measurement. If it is comfortable but the body pulls, try the other fit before sizing up.
Where do you find chest, waist and sleeve measurements?
The comparison table above gives you chest, waist, shirt length and sleeve measurements in centimetres and inches. Our Size Finder covers the full core size range. For sleeve length, compare the garment measurement with a shirt you wear comfortably.
Find your fit
Start with a shirt you already wear well.
Our Size Finder offers three ways in: height and weight, a shirt you already own, or your own neck, chest and waist measurements. Begin with the collar size you know, then check the garment chart and available fit before ordering.

What about shirts untucked, under a suit or in summer?
Under a suit jacket
Neither fit is automatically more formal. Slim can look streamlined beneath tailoring; Classic can look equally sharp if the shoulders and collar are right and there's no unnecessary bunching. Follow the occasion's dress code first, then choose the shirt cut that allows you to move.
Worn untucked
A tapered body often creates a cleaner untucked outline, but fit and shirt length are not the same thing. Check the actual back length and hem shape. A Slim Fit made to tuck can still be too long to wear loose, and a well-proportioned Classic Fit can look relaxed rather than boxy.
Warm days and long office hours
Classic Fit may offer additional ease, but cotton weave and fabric weight also affect how a shirt feels. A lightweight poplin wears differently from a heavier twill or oxford. Read our dress-shirt fabric guide when heat and comfort are part of the decision.
Does Slim Fit shrink more?
Not simply because it is Slim Fit. Changes after washing depend on the fabric, construction and laundering. A closer cut can make any change more noticeable. Follow the individual care label instead of sizing down or relying on future shrinkage.

Slim Fit vs Classic Fit: your questions answered
Should I size up in Slim Fit?
Not automatically. Keep your comfortable collar size and compare Classic Fit if the chest or waist pulls. Size up when the collar or another measurement genuinely requires it.
Is Classic Fit the same as Regular Fit?
At OTAA, Classic is the roomier of our two principal cuts. Other labels use “regular” differently, so compare finished measurements rather than the fit name.
What about tailored, athletic and extra slim fit?
These terms vary across brands. Start with OTAA's Slim and Classic cuts, then compare the finished chest and waist measurements.
Which is best for broad shoulders?
Start with your correct collar size, then check upper-back room. A broad-shouldered man can wear Slim if it moves comfortably; otherwise compare Classic.
Which fit works with a fuller stomach?
Classic Fit often gives more ease at the waist. Sit and lean forward to check button strain, while keeping the collar and shoulders correctly fitted.
Can Slim Fit be worn untucked?
Yes, if its actual back length and hem suit an untucked outfit. Slim describes the body shape, not a guaranteed hem length.
Can a Classic Fit shirt go under a slim suit jacket?
Yes. Check that the shirt stays comfortable across the shoulders and doesn't gather excessively around the jacket's waist.
Does Slim Fit shrink more?
The cut alone doesn't determine shrinkage. Read the care instructions for the shirt's fabric and consider that a small change can feel more noticeable in a closer fit.
Is the same OTAA shirt sold in both fits?
Yes—the OTAA WHITE SHIRT offers both. Currently, collar sizes 41 and 43 are available in both cuts. Its fit-and-size picker shows the live options.
How can I check sleeve length?
Read the sleeve column above and compare it with a shirt that fits. The OTAA WHITE SHIRT chart lists 65 cm at size 38, and 66 cm at sizes 40 and 42, in both fits. Your collar number is a separate measurement.
What if it doesn't fit when it arrives?
Eligible unworn shirts can be exchanged free within 60 days of fulfilment. Keep the tags and packaging until you're confident, then follow the returns process.
