Kentucky Derby Men's Style Guide
You don’t need a pastel suit to look the part at the Kentucky Derby. A familiar navy jacket can do a great deal with the right horse tie.

Familiar tailoring. Race-day character.
Keep the suit. Make it Derby day.
A crisp white collar, a burgundy horse tie and one considered pocket square. Familiar navy tailoring is all you need for our classic Derby edit.

For a polished Derby outfit, start with a suit or sports coat and tailored trousers, a well-fitting dress shirt, a necktie or bow tie, and shoes you can walk in. Add colour through one or two details. Churchill Downs has different dress requirements by area, so check the code for your exact ticket before choosing the outfit.
What should you wear for your Kentucky Derby plans?
The Kentucky Derby’s official style guidance makes room for colourful suits, sports coats, pastels and prints. Churchill Downs uses Track Casual, Smart Casual and Business Casual dress categories, with requirements that vary by room and race day. Check the current guidance for the exact area on your ticket. The table below is our styling advice.
As a guide from Louisville’s Courier Journal: a jacket is required in The Mansion and the Derby Room; the Turf Club, Trophy Room and Millionaires Row ask for business casual, meaning a collared shirt and no denim or athletic shoes; and the infield has no formal dress code. Confirm the current rules for your ticket before you go.
| Your plans | What we’d wear | The useful detail |
|---|---|---|
| Hospitality or a dressed-up restaurant | A suit, plain dress shirt, necktie or bow tie and polished leather shoes | Use a small motif and a neat square; keep the jacket ready for the full outfit. |
| Outdoor reserved seating | Tailoring with a comfortable shirt, colourful neckwear and shoes already worn in | Choose layers for the forecast and test the outfit while seated. |
| An infield day | A comfortable collared shirt, practical trousers and footwear suited to standing outdoors | Make the hat or accessory the focal point; plan for the ground and weather. |
| A Derby party at home or a local venue | A jacket and horse tie, or an open collar with a horse-print pocket square | Dress to the host’s invitation and the room you’ll spend the afternoon in. |
You can get the colour right with the suit you already own. Navy, mid-grey and stone give burgundy, pale pink and horse motifs a clear backdrop. If the jacket has a strong check, use a plain shirt and simplify the neckwear.
Kentucky Oaks vs Kentucky Derby: what changes?
For the Kentucky Oaks on Friday, make pink the starting point. The event’s Pink Out tradition supports breast cancer awareness. Saturday’s Kentucky Derby gives you a broader palette: pale blue, mint, yellow, burgundy and playful horse motifs all work with familiar tailoring.
| The event | 2027 date | Our outfit starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Kentucky Oaks | Friday 30 April 2027 | Light-grey suit, white shirt, pink tie and navy pocket square. |
| Kentucky Derby | Saturday 1 May 2027 | Navy or lighter tailoring, a plain shirt and one colourful tie, bow tie or square. |
Our Kentucky Oaks combination pairs the Blush Pink Slub Linen Necktie with a Navy Blue Linen Chambray Pocket Square. The tie’s slub texture adds interest without a large print; the darker square gives the pink a clear companion. Use a small straight fold and let the tie lead.
Prefer the colour in your shirt? The Pendleton Non-Iron Dobby Shirt and navy horse tie in our pink-shirt outfit give you another route.

Four Kentucky Derby outfits to build around your suit
Choose the edit closest to your wardrobe. Each pairs a shirt, neckwear and square with familiar tailoring, so the new piece has a clear job.
01 · The classic horse tie
Navy tailoring, white shirt, burgundy jockeys
Navy suit + white shirt + Kentucky Derby Race Horse Necktie + White Linen Pocket Square.
This is our easiest starting point for a dressed-up Derby day. The burgundy tie adds depth against navy, while the small horses and jockeys give it personality up close. The photograph at the top shows how well the motif sits beneath a crisp white collar.
The Kentucky Derby Race Horse Necktie is 8.5 cm wide. Start with a compact four-in-hand knot and let the tip reach around your waistband. Finish with a narrow straight fold of the White Linen Pocket Square and brown or black leather shoes. Keep the rest of the accessories quiet.

02 · The bow-tie invitation
Light grey, a white collar and a burgundy bow
Light-grey suit + white shirt + Kentucky Derby Race Horse Bow Tie + Ivory Linen Pocket Square.

A bow tie brings the horses up to the face and leaves the shirt front clean. With grey tailoring, the burgundy has enough contrast to be noticed without needing a louder jacket. We would add the Ivory Linen Pocket Square in a small fold for a softer finish.
Our Kentucky Derby Race Horse Bow Tie is pre-tied with an adjustable neck strap. It suits the man who wants the shape ready to go. Wear a regular dress-shirt collar and fasten the top button so the band sits neatly underneath.

Soft ivory · 100% linen · A quiet finishing detail
Wearing seersucker? With a blue-and-white striped suit, start with a plain white shirt. The burgundy horse bow tie brings contrast, while the ivory linen square keeps the pocket quiet. Leave out a striped shirt so the suit has room.
03 · A little spring colour
A pale-pink shirt with navy and warm horse motifs
Mid-grey or navy suit + Pendleton shirt + American Quarter Horse Tie + a plain white square.

A pink shirt gives familiar tailoring a spring mood. Keep the tie darker: the navy ground of the American Quarter Horse Tie anchors the colour, while its warm horse motifs bring a small contrast. Mid-grey is especially easy here; navy works when you want the outfit darker overall.
The Pendleton Non-Iron Dobby Shirt is our dusty-rose Classic Fit option in cotton, with button cuffs. Choose the collar size that closes comfortably, then check the chest and waist while sitting. Our dress-shirt fit checklist walks through the mirror check. Reuse the white square from the first edit rather than adding another pattern.

04 · Let the pocket do the talking
A horse-print square and a plain navy tie
Navy or mid-grey tailoring + pale-blue shirt + Matutine Navy Knitted Tie + Kentucky Derby Race Horse Pocket Square.

Move the race-day detail from the neck to the breast pocket. Our Kentucky Derby Race Horse Pocket Square puts horses and jockeys on burgundy; a small puff reveals enough of the print to make the connection.
Wear it with the Matutine Navy Knitted Tie and a plain shirt for a composed, textured combination. The tie has a pointed end and is 6.8 cm wide, giving a narrower line than the woven horse ties above. At a relaxed party, the open-collar version in the photo is a complete outfit in its own right.

Kentucky Derby bow tie or necktie: which should you wear?
Both belong in a Derby outfit. Choose a necktie for a longer line and more room to show a small repeat. Choose a bow when you want the pattern concentrated at the collar, especially beneath a jacket with generous lapels.
A pre-tied bow is the quickest route. A self-tie gives you the pleasure of tying it yourself and a slightly individual shape. Practise before the morning you leave; a bow that feels comfortable beats one you spend the afternoon adjusting.
| You want | Start here | Final check |
|---|---|---|
| A classic suit silhouette | Kentucky Derby Race Horse Necktie | Tip at the waistband; a knot that sits within the collar. |
| A ready-shaped bow | Kentucky Derby Race Horse Bow Tie | Adjust the strap before leaving; tuck it beneath the collar. |
| An untied bow to knot yourself | Navy Blue Race Horse Self Tie Bow Tie | Tighten gently and balance the folded loops. |
Use the same steps for your Derby horse tie.

How do you pair horse motifs, checks and pocket squares?
Give the horse print one clear place in the outfit. With a horse tie or bow, use a plain square. With the horse-print square, choose plain neckwear. Pull a colour from the motif rather than reproducing the entire design at the pocket, collar and lapel.
Scale matters when you add a patterned jacket. A widely spaced jacket check gives a small horse repeat some separation; a tight, high-contrast check can make the same tie look crowded. A plain navy knit is a useful change of plan when the suit already supplies enough detail.

For the square, try a small puff with the Derby print: pinch the centre, gather the fabric underneath and tuck it into the pocket until a few motifs show. For plain linen, fold to the pocket’s width and show a narrow straight edge. Our pocket-square folding guide covers the steps. Keep bulky sunglasses and a phone out of the same pocket.

What about hats, shoes and the weather?
Choose a hat that finishes the outfit
A straw hat with a simple band is our starting point for a sunny-day look. Try it on with the jacket: the brim should feel balanced with your face and shoulders. Keep the band quiet when the tie carries the print. A hat is a good finishing piece when you enjoy wearing one; you don’t need to build the whole outfit around it.
Wear the shoes before race day
Brown loafers or lace-ups work with navy, stone and mid-grey; black shoes give darker tailoring a more formal finish. Choose a pair you can already walk and stand in comfortably. For outdoor plans, consider the ground as well as the photograph. Keep socks understated and the trouser hem clear of the heel. For navy tailoring and brown shoes, our dress-sock colour guide gives you a straightforward starting point.
Pack for the actual forecast
Plan the shirt, jacket and outer layer together. For a warm forecast, choose a comfortable shirt and lighter tailoring. For rain, pack a lightweight clear poncho: Churchill Downs’ visiting guidance excludes umbrellas because they block other guests’ views. Add sunscreen for outdoor plans and check the current permitted-items list before packing. Try sitting, reaching and walking in the full outfit before travelling.
Fasten the collar while doing that test. You should be able to slip roughly one finger flat between the neck and collar without strain. If the shirt pulls across the chest or waist, solve the fit before adding the tie. The seven-point fit checklist gives you a practical way to check it.
What should men wear to a Kentucky Derby party?
A party is a good excuse to give everyday tailoring a different mood. At a restaurant or dressed-up house party, we would wear the navy-suit and burgundy-tie edit. For a relaxed garden gathering, a jacket, open pale-blue collar and the horse-print square do the work. Let the host’s invitation set the formality.

Kentucky Derby men’s style questions
What should men wear to the Kentucky Derby?
Start with a suit or sports coat and tailored trousers, a well-fitting dress shirt, a necktie or bow tie, and comfortable polished shoes. Add personality through one colourful accessory. Churchill Downs dress requirements vary by area, so use the code attached to your ticket.
Is there a dress code at Churchill Downs?
Yes. Churchill Downs uses Track Casual, Smart Casual and Business Casual categories. Requirements depend on the room and race day, and Derby Week can change the usual rules. Use the current guidance for the exact area named on your ticket.
Can men wear jeans or shorts to the Kentucky Derby?
Dress jeans, without tears or fraying, appear in Churchill Downs’ Track Casual guidance. For Kentucky Derby Week, follow the specific code for your room or ticket. Our four dressed-up outfit combinations use tailored trousers.
What should men wear to the Kentucky Oaks?
Start with pink for the event’s Pink Out tradition, which supports breast cancer awareness. We would wear a light-grey suit, white shirt, pink linen tie and navy pocket square. A pink shirt with darker neckwear is another way to bring in the colour.
Do you have to wear a bow tie to the Kentucky Derby?
Either a necktie or a bow tie works with Kentucky Derby tailoring. Choose a necktie for a longer line down the shirt, or a bow to bring the pattern up to the collar. Both suit the colourful mood of the event’s official style guidance.
Can I wear a navy or black suit to the Kentucky Derby?
Yes. We would brighten a navy suit with a white shirt and burgundy horse tie. With black or charcoal tailoring, try a pale shirt and a single colourful tie or pocket square. You can create the mood without buying a pastel suit.
Is a horse tie appropriate for the Kentucky Derby?
A small repeated horse or jockey motif is an easy way to connect your outfit to the day. Keep the shirt plain and choose a quiet pocket square so the pattern has room. A navy or burgundy ground makes the motif easy to pair with familiar tailoring.
Should my Kentucky Derby pocket square match my tie?
It can share a colour without repeating the same print. Wear a plain white or ivory square with a horse tie; wear the horse-print square with a plain navy tie or an open collar at a relaxed party. We prefer one clear equestrian detail.
What is the difference between a pre-tied and self-tie Kentucky Derby bow tie?
A pre-tied bow is already shaped and fastens with an adjustable neck strap. A self-tie arrives untied and needs to be knotted by hand. Our Kentucky Derby Race Horse Bow Tie is pre-tied; our Navy Blue Race Horse Self Tie Bow Tie is the untied alternative.
What should men wear to a Kentucky Derby party?
For a dressed-up party, choose a navy jacket, plain shirt and a horse tie or bow tie. At a relaxed garden gathering, an open collar and horse-print pocket square give you the race-day detail. Let the host’s invitation set the formality.
Is the Kentucky Derby the same as Derby Day in Australia?
No. The Kentucky Derby is at Churchill Downs in Louisville, in the US spring. Victoria Derby Day at Flemington is a separate Australian event with a black-and-white style tradition. Kentucky Derby outfits can embrace colour, pastels and playful accessories.
When is the next Kentucky Derby?
The next Kentucky Derby is Saturday 1 May 2027 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Plan time to try your outfit, practise the knot and check delivery estimates before travelling.
