For his first visit to Massachusetts Island, he took a steamer which is the home port of his novel's mythic protagonist, Captain Ahab, and his ship Pequod. Meanwhile, when he was on his way to Nantucket, he met the 60 year old man who had captained the Essex, it was a ship that had been attacked by a sperm whale in an 1820 incident that had inspired Melville's novel. When the Essex went down, Captain George Pollard Jr. was still 29 years old and he survived and returned to Nantucket to captain the second whaling ship, Two Brothers. But when the ship wrecked 2 years later by the coral reef, he stopped sailing and lived out his remaining years on land as the village night watchman.
