In 814, at the time of his death his expanded kingdom included the majority of what is now considered Western and some of Central Europe. Charlemagne is sometimes considered as the father of Europe because of how he was able to have so much of the continent controlled by one ruler. As centuries pass over centuries, the name Charlemagne became associated with the unification of European, whether it is through peaceful or war initiatives as the European Union. Just like how Napoleon Bonaparte who had his own dreams of empire declared in 1806: “Je suis Charlemagne” – “I am Charlemagne”.
