The Most Well Dressed Men of the 77th Golden Globe Awards

So, the 77th golden globe awards came and went. In light of that glitzy night at the Beverly Hilton hotel, what can we take away from all this? Red carpet events such as this usually is a very telling microcosm of the celebrity world, not just because of the handing of certain awards, accolades and titles off to certain people deemed worthy of them in view of their peers to mark important accomplishments, but also because the fashion on display reveals each player's standing within the community and their success and accomplishments therein. This can range from the accomplished old hands comfortable in their well worn but still classy tuxes to the new and upcoming green horns with edgy one-off outfits raring to prove themselves to the world. As we think of events such as this, we immediately think of our youth's collective memories of something like the prom, of stuffy dinner jackets or bow ties too floppy. The marked difference between this and the reality is that each player has the freedom and confidence to dress how they please, to rock an outfit that works the best with them or to choose what fashion statement they're making with their outfit

Though people tend to place more attention on the womenswear and not so much on the men because they think while the women are allowed a lot of lee way regarding dress and not so much for the men, nothing could be further from the truth. It comes to show that even within the confines of a black-tie dress code, the lee way for men is surprisingly wide. And with this evening's menswear, the spectrum and range we see shows it's anything but fixed nor boring.

WESLEY SNIPES - 2020 Golden Globe Award
We'll start with those in traditionally styled sombre colours, to establish the ground rules - immaculate black tuxedo well suited to the wearer, matching hand-tied bow tie, patent leather shoes.

The old Hollywood glam through and through

BRAD PITT - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
BRAD PITT - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a black Brioni tuxedo with peaked lapel jacket and matching waistcoat, topped by a hand tied velvet bow tie. Also wearing David Yurman accessories. Clearly Hollywood glam done right

LEONARDO DICAPRIO - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
LEONARDO DICAPRIO - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a near identical tux with his co-star Brad Pitt from the movie ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD, Leonardo wears a black Giorgio Armani tuxedo, the jacket having a shawl collar as opposed to Brad's peaked lapel collar, and opting for no cummerbund or waistcoat to keep it simple and streamlined. His black bow tie purposely smaller to keep the proportions of his outfit in check. David Yurman accessories to match Brad's outfit and to complete the look of classic Hollywood glamour
BEN PLATT - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
BEN PLATT - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a black tux by Louis Vuitton, with peak lapeled jacket paired with a black bow tie, this is as traditional as you can get, which isn't a bad thing but unusual for Ben Platt, who had for some reason taken a departure from his usual wild style on the red carpet.

DANIEL CRAIG - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
DANIEL CRAIG - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a black tuxedo by Anderson & Sheppard from England, with double-breasted tux bearing large peak-lapels, topped by a hand tied black satin bow tie to make proportions tight on the top. White pocket square to even things out. Classic and daring within the confines of tradition, the wearer knows his stuff.

VELVET TUXEDOS

There's something to be said about velvet - though it is hardly new, it never fails to have people notice with good reason - it is a step up from the norm yet it is still establishment because it is an understated extravagance, for everyone appreciates a well-tailored velvet suit.
TOM HANKS - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
TOM HANKS - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a black tuxedo from Tom Ford, with a black velvet shawl collar jacket and black butterfly satin bow tie. White satin pocket square and wire-rimmed glasses complete the old hollywood glamour look.
CHRIS EVANS - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
CHRIS EVANS - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a burgundy velvet Isaia tuxedo with a satin black bow tie. Also wearing Mont Blanc accessories and Christian Louboutin shoes. Adventurously deviant yet respecting the norms

TONY SHALHOUB - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
TONY SHALHOUB - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a navy blue velvet, double-breasted peak-lapel tuxedo jacket paired with black tuxedo pants. Shows the new kids there's more variety to tuxedo jackets than the usual. Tops the outfit with a cool pair of glasses by ic! Berlin and a white satin bow tie.
EDDIE MURPHY - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
EDDIE MURPHY - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Complimenting his co-star Wesley Snipes (seen further down) in the film "Dolemite is my name", Eddie Murphy wears a burgundy shawl-collar tuxedo jacket paired with black pants and a black turtleneck, a combination one upping his co-star in the classiness arena but keeping it casual without a bow tie. Accessorized with silver jewellery.
ROMAN GRIFFIN DAVIS - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
ROMAN GRIFFIN DAVIS - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a burnt-orange velvet tuxedo as a nod to Taron Egerton's character Eggsy Unwin from the film Kingsman: Golden circle. Parents and child stylists take heed, the proportions of this outfit fits Roman down to the T. Black satin hand tied bow tie and matching pocket square to complete the look.

JASON MOMOA - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
JASON MOMOA - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a green velvet Tom Ford tuxedo jacket and black Valentino tuxedo pants. And tank top. Also Cartier lapel pin and watch, with large Pounamu pendant necklace from Tribal Adornments. Actually a nice nod to tradition for an outfit meant to look casual, further exemplified by the fact Momoa lent his wife his jacket at one point during the awards because she was cold. Can't be more gentlemanly than that.

CHEEKY COLOURS

Even if the dress code calls for a black tux, even if the rules said not to go past this line drawn on the floor, there's always someone who's going to either toe that line or just thrash the line altogether. Though a little colour might offend the purists, they can enhance the outfit if done right or speak volumes of the wearer's personality.

ANDREW SCOTT - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
ANDREW SCOTT - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a cream coloured tuxedo jacket from Paul Smith with black tuxedo pants, paired with a pinstripe dress shirt. Also hand tied satin gold bow tie. Christian Louboutin shoes and Mont blanc cufflinks. Revealed plans to work with Phoebe Waller-Bridge again after Fleabag and what a way to announce it in grand but traditional garb, not unlike a priest at mass

JOE MANGANIELLO - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
JOE MANGANIELLO - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a black tuxedo from Dolce & Gabbana, with a black shawl collar jacket with bejewelled pocket flaps, waist coat, and extra large bow tie. While the unusual pocket flaps are up for debate, the cut and styling of the tuxedo is impeccable and serves to offset Joe's rustic salt and pepper beard.
TAIKA WAITITI - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
TAIKA WAITITI - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a tuxedo from Ermenegildo Zegna XXX with shawl collared white jacket and black pants. Also wore tone-on-tone black hand tied satin bow tie and black dress shirt to even the look out. Tod's black patent leather shoes, David Yurman cufflinks, and black satin pocket square to complete the look of understated old school casual.

RAMI MALEK - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
RAMI MALEK - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a tuxedo from Saint Laurent, with black velvet jacket and normal tux pants but opting instead to wear a black pointed skinny tie to put a simple sophisticated twist on the black tux look. Accessorized by a Cartier white gold pin and Cartier Tank Solo to complement Lucy Boynton's metallic silver gown

THE DOWNRIGHT BIZARRE
Clearly they either didn't get the memo or they set it on fire and watched it burn. Viva la difference
WESLEY SNIPES - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
WESLEY SNIPES - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a wild, deep burgundy three-piece suit by Bogard Man with a pink ruffled tuxedo shirt, topped by an extra large black velvet hand tied bow tie to match the exaggeratedly peaked velvet lapels. This is definitely an outfit meant to have fun thumbing their nose at the purists but keeping it establishment 70s style
BARRY JENKINS - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
BARRY JENKINS - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a black and white checkered suit by Thom Browne with the brand's distinct 4 black bar bands on left sleeve and pants leg. Topped with black accessories and satin black bow tie. Interesting departure from black tie, the outfit takes monochrome styling to new and unique directions.
SACHA BARON COHEN - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
SACHA BARON COHEN - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing a bright electric blue tuxedo from Dolce & Gabbana, with jacket that is double breasted and wide peak lapeled and the monochrome outfit topped by an azure blue satin bow tie. The outfit is only interrupted by the black patent leather Christian Louboutin shoes. The way the suit is impeccably fitted to Sacha and Sacha's clean shaven look suggests a rigid structured approach to otherwise "alternative" styling

BILLY PORTER - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
BILLY PORTER - 2020 Golden Globe Awards
Wearing an all white tuxedo custom made by Alex Vinash and with a feathered train that is thankfully zip off for sitting down at the dinner event. Compared to previous years, this isn't the most outrageous outfit by Porter yet, but it still stole the show with its exuberant elaborate styling that took 3 months to create. Also complementing the outfit are Jimmy Choo boots and a Tiffany necklace.
