Linen Ties: How to Wear the Summer Tie
The invitation says smart. The forecast says summer. Your usual shirt and jacket can stay; the tie is where we would change the mood.
Wear a linen tie with a cotton shirt, a compact knot and tailoring that lets its texture show. Navy is an easy office starting point; pale neutrals, green and warm stripes bring a lighter touch to weddings and outdoor lunches. Keep the shirt quieter than a patterned tie, then finish with a pocket square in a different colour or pattern.

A familiar outfit. A different texture.
Summer, tied together.
We like linen for the character it brings to a neat collar: visible texture, softer colour and an easy finish. Your tie can take a summer holiday without the rest of you dressing for the beach.
What is a linen tie, and why wear one in summer?
Linen is a textile made from flax. In neckwear, it brings a textured surface that sits comfortably beside cotton shirts and summer tailoring. Slub describes the small irregularities in the yarn; herringbone describes a zigzag weave. Both add interest to a single-colour tie.
The Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp reports that linen fabrics absorb moisture and allow moisture transfer. That makes a linen tie more comfortable against a warm collar than a heavy silk. Wear it through your spring and summer: roughly September to March in Australia, and March to August in the US. On an Australian January day that can mean 31°C in Brisbane and 27°C in Sydney and Melbourne. Our guide to staying cool in a shirt and tie covers the whole outfit and the journey to work.
Our linen edit includes both linen and linen-blend ties, with plains, stripes and small patterns. A textured navy keeps things restrained. A brown stripe or pale neutral changes the feel more visibly. There is no need to buy an entire linen wardrobe to wear one.

Which linen weave should you choose?

|---|---|---|
| Slub | Uneven, nubby yarn; the most summery | Navy Blue Slub Linen Necktie · Shop |
| Chambray | Flat, softly mottled | Light Blue Linen Chambray Necktie · Shop |
| Herringbone | Fine zigzag; the smartest linen | Light Grey Herringbone Linen Necktie · Shop |
| Donegal | Flecks of colour; tweedy | Dry Grey Donegal Linen Tie · Shop |
| Textured | Pronounced surface | Don Quixote Navy Textured Linen Tie · Shop |
Linen vs silk vs cotton: which tie should you wear?
Choose linen for visible texture, smooth silk for a dressier sheen, and cotton for a relaxed daytime finish. For our summer combinations, linen is the starting point: it changes the character of a familiar shirt and suit.
| Tie fabric | Typical finish | Where we would wear it |
|---|---|---|
| Linen | Matte, with a crisp woven texture | Summer offices, daytime weddings and lighter tailoring |
| Silk | Smooth silk often has a soft sheen; textured weaves can be matte | Polished business dressing and evening occasions |
| Cotton | Usually matte, with a softer, relaxed surface | Daytime separates, casual weddings and patterned looks |
Blends combine characteristics, so a linen-blend tie can have a smoother finish than a slub linen style. Start with the surface and colour you want, then choose a compact knot that sits neatly in your collar.
Can you wear a linen tie to work or a wedding?
Yes. A linen tie works well with a business suit, a summer wedding outfit or a separate jacket and trousers. Let the invitation or workplace set the formality, then use colour and pattern to tune the tie.
| Occasion | Our starting point | How to finish |
|---|---|---|
| Office or client lunch | Deep Navy Linen Necktie with a blue-striped or white shirt. | Navy or grey tailoring; a small, tidy knot. |
| Summer wedding | Dry Khaki White Linen Tie or Dusty Emerald Green Linen Necktie. | A pale shirt, a jacket and one quiet pocket square. |
| Garden lunch or relaxed dinner | Copperfield Court Stripe Necktie with a blue cotton shirt. | Separate tailoring or chinos, with the shirt tucked in. |
| Evening reception | Purple Plum Slub Linen Necktie. | A darker jacket and restrained accessories. |
| Black tie | A tuxedo and black bow tie. | Save the linen necktie for a different invitation. |

What shirt and suit colours work with linen ties?
A white or pale blue shirt is the simplest canvas. With stripes, vary the scale: a fine shirt stripe gives a broad diagonal tie stripe room to stand out. If both patterns are small and busy, make one piece plain.
| Linen tie | Shirt | Tailoring |
|---|---|---|
| Deep Navy Linen Necktie | Pale blue or a blue-and-white stripe. | Navy, mid-grey or charcoal. |
| Copperfield Court Stripe Necktie | Pale blue; keep the shirt pattern fine. | Navy or warm beige. |
| Dusty Emerald Green Linen Necktie | White for a clear contrast. | Blue, navy or a light neutral. |
| Dry Khaki White Linen Tie | White or pale blue. | Light grey, blue or a darker navy. |
| Purple Plum Slub Linen Necktie | White, pale blue or a restrained dark stripe. | Navy, grey or charcoal. |
Yes, a linen tie can go with a linen suit. Give the eye a change of surface with a smooth cotton shirt. You can also wear the tie with a lightweight wool suit or cotton jacket; matching every fabric is not the assignment.

Blue stripes and deep navy
Paxton Sapphire Stripe Non-Iron Poplin Shirt gives the plain Deep Navy Linen Necktie a clear background. The shirt is Classic Fit cotton poplin; the tie adds a subtle herringbone surface rather than another bold pattern. Wear the pair with mid-grey trousers or a navy suit.
A Grey Linen Chambray Pocket Square gives a jacket pocket a quieter finish than repeating the tie exactly.

View bagWhat is the best knot for a linen tie?
Start with a four-in-hand. Its compact, slightly asymmetric shape gives textured cloth a neat finish without piling up fabric under the collar. A half-Windsor adds a little more width and symmetry when the collar has room.
Tie it with the shirt you will wear. Slide the knot up until it meets the closed collar, shape a small dimple beneath it, and let the blade hang straight. If the knot pushes the collar points apart, start again with a smaller knot. Our shirt collar guide shows how the shape of the collar changes the result.
Should you choose a standard or skinny linen tie?
Choose width for the proportions of the outfit. A broader lapel can carry a standard tie; a narrow lapel often suits a slimmer blade. The knot, collar and tie should look balanced together.
| OTAA tie | Length | Widest point | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep Navy Linen Necktie | 145 cm / 57.1 in | 8.5 cm / 3.35 in | A fuller blade with classic tailoring. |
| Light Grey Herringbone Linen Skinny Tie | 145 cm / 57.1 in | 6 cm / 2.36 in | A narrower outline with slimmer lapels. |
Both are the same overall length. A skinny tie changes width, not the finishing point: aim for the tip around the top to middle of your belt buckle. Our tie length guide covers adjusting the starting length and knot.

Which pocket square goes with a linen tie?
Complement the tie rather than repeating it exactly. With navy or a busy stripe, a white linen square is an easy finish. With a pale tie, a quiet grey square gives a different tone. Pick up one colour from the outfit and change the pattern or texture.
Use a straight fold for work or a loose puff for a relaxed event; our pocket square tutorials show both. If you wear a tie bar, keep it narrower than the tie and fasten both blades to the shirt placket. Choose one small finishing detail, then let the linen do its work.
Prefer a bow tie for a daytime celebration? Our linen bow ties bring the same textured direction to a plain shirt and tailored jacket. Keep the pocket square in a different colour or pattern so each detail has room to work.

How do you care for a linen tie and its creases?
Linen can crease; small surface wrinkles are part of its character. A hard fold left in the blade or a knot stored tightly is worth avoiding. After wearing it, reverse the tying steps gently instead of pulling the narrow end through a tight knot.
Let the tie rest untied between wears, then store it loosely rolled or hanging without crowding. For a work trip or summer wedding, pack it loosely so another garment does not press a hard fold into it. Tie the knot close to arrival.
Can you iron a linen tie? Steam it instead. Hang the tie in the bathroom while a hot shower runs, or pass a handheld steamer over it from a short distance; the moisture relaxes the creases. Never press it flat: the iron can crush the folds and edges. Every tie featured here is dry clean only. If you use a dry cleaner, ask them not to press it.
Find your summer tie
For an Australian summer office, start with navy and a cotton shirt that fits comfortably. For a US summer wedding, try a pale neutral or a green accent with a light shirt. The same combinations travel; choose the shade and formality for your day.
Keep the tailoring you like. Give it a different texture.

Are linen ties formal enough for work?
Yes. A restrained navy, grey or small-patterned linen tie works with a business suit and a neat cotton shirt. Use your office’s usual level of formality as the starting point.
Can I wear a linen tie to a wedding?
Yes, especially with summer tailoring for daytime, garden or coastal weddings. Black tie calls for a tuxedo and black bow tie.
Can I wear a linen tie with a linen shirt?
Yes. Keep the collar neatly fastened and use a simple knot. For a cleaner contrast of surfaces, we prefer a smooth cotton shirt with a textured tie.
What colour linen tie goes with a navy suit?
Pale khaki, light grey, green, plum and brown-and-navy stripes all work. Start with a white or pale blue shirt, then choose one tie colour to lead.
Is a four-in-hand a good knot for linen?
Yes. It is a compact starting point for textured cloth. Try a half-Windsor if you want a wider, more symmetrical shape and the collar has enough room.
Do I need a linen suit to wear a linen tie?
No. A linen tie also works with cotton jackets and lightweight wool suits. Let colour and pattern connect the pieces.
Does a linen tie have to be pale?
No. Navy, forest green and plum bring summer texture in darker colours. They work well for the office and evening events.
Can I wash a linen tie?
Every tie featured in this guide is dry clean only. Keep it out of the washing machine.
Can I wear a linen tie outside summer?
Yes. Darker shades and earthy stripes work with transitional tailoring. Choose the outfit and occasion rather than a fixed date on the calendar.
Is linen or silk better for a summer tie?
We choose linen when we want a matte, textured finish with summer tailoring. Smooth silk gives a more polished sheen for business or evening dressing. For hot days, linen is our pick.
Do linen ties wrinkle, and can I iron one?
Yes. Untie it gently, then hang it or store it loosely rolled. Steam out creases with a handheld steamer held a short distance away, or hang it in a steamy bathroom. Never press it flat. Every tie featured here is dry clean only; ask your cleaner not to press it.
