In June 1914 Edward VIII joined the Grenadier Guards. He was made staff officer to Sir John French a commander-in-chief of the British Expeditionary Force instead of what he volunteered as active duty on the outbreak of the First World War in August. Edward chaired the Patriotic Fund for the soldiers and sailors' care and even visited the British Empire and Dominions troops including Canada. In 1918 armistice was signed when Edward was still with the Canadian Corps by this his admiration to the Canadian troops emerged.
